Ways to use bamboo skewers Sep 03 , 2022

Bamboo is a popular base material for many eco-friendly items, including kitchenware. Because bamboo regenerates rapidly through its roots and is naturally antibacterial, it is widely considered to be a safe and sustainable choice.

Using bamboo skewers with food

If you’re using bamboo skewers in the oven, grill or on a barbecue, soak them in warm water for between 10–30 minutes beforehand, to avoid burning.

Keeping burgers and sandwiches together

Bamboo paddle skewers are great for holding a stacked burger or sandwich together for perfect presentation. Whether you’re impressing guests or trying not to drop food as you eat it, skewers help keep your meal together so all the ingredients can be enjoyed in one go.

Kebab skewers

There are as many possible combinations as there are ingredients when grilling or barbecuing fresh kebabs. From traditional meat, halloumi, and vegetable combinations to vegan skewers with fresh roasted peppers, tomatoes, sweetcorn, and aubergine – there’s something for everyone.

Chicken satay skewers

Another classic treat on a skewer is delicious chicken satay. Swap the chicken for tofu or other alternatives for meat-free versions. Choose peanut butter free from palm oil for the sauce, to reduce the potential environmental impact.

Salad skewers

Add a modern twist to a garden party classic by layering fresh tomato, basil leaves and slices of mozzarella for a vibrant caprese salad on a skewer. No need to sit down with bowls or cutlery – guests can enjoy their fresh snacks on the go, socialising or admiring the garden as they do so.

Skewers for toasting marshmallows

Long bamboo skewers are tried and tested marshmallow toasters. Made without chemicals, they are completely safe to go into the campfire after use.

Try stepping up the luxury by using skewers to dip marshmallows or fresh fruit into melted chocolate fondue. For a savoury twist, dip into melted cheese fondue with crispy bread and chopped vegetables.

Fresh fruit ice lollies

Almost any fruit can be blended with ice, poured into a mould over a bamboo skewer and frozen. Ice smoothies make easy, healthy, zero-waste snacks in warm weather or for parties. Mix banana with milk for creamier versions. Add a little honey for an extra sweet treat.

Watermelon can be used to make decorative lollies. Keep the rind intact while scooping out the fruit and blend the pulpy interior. Skewer the rind at regular intervals, pour the mixture over and freeze. Cut into triangles once frozen for refreshing watermelon slices.

Other uses for bamboo skewers

Staking indoor plants

Bamboo can survive in moist soil better than many other types of wood due to its anti-microbial properties. This means bamboo skewers can be useful for supporting seedlings or growing plants. They’ll also perform the task without disrupting the pH- or nutrient balance of the soil.

Knitting needles

In a pinch, thin and pointed skewers can be used in place of knitting needles. While actual knitting needles will be better in the long term, they’re more than good enough as a short-term replacement.

Home decoration

Leftover skewers can be used to create beautiful natural dinner mats. Tie the ends together with twine or flax, then either paint a design,

Use skewers to check your bakes

The long reach of bamboo skewers makes it easier to check baking items without burning yourself. Unlike metal skewers, they won’t conduct heat quickly when inserted into a hot oven.
